21st Paradigm: A way of thinking for the 21st Century that respects the intrinsic value of all life - that is, the right of other life forms to exist regardless of their instrumental values to humans. Not only the pretty birds but also the predators and reptiles, the ugly and unloved have a right to be left in peace, to exist not only for the pleasure and health and instruction of humans but for their own sake.

Vanessa Schulz

A lifelong photographer, Vanessa grew up in South Africa, inspired by the
natural world. After attending film school in Cape Town, she immigrated to
the United States to gain further experience working as producer and
cameraman for NBC, Fox, National Geographic and Discovery Channel. She was Assistant Producer on Discovery’s two-time Emmy award-winning “Wolves at our Door.”

Frustrated with mainstream media's reluctance to air contentious and
truthful subject matter, Vanessa created 21st Paradigm, which became
incorporated as a non-profit organization in February 2001.

In addition to 24 official film festival selections, Vanessa is the
recipient of twelve awards, including Best of Festival and Best Documentary
awards. Her most successful film, “Cost of Freedom,” an exposé about wolf
reintroduction and the gross exploitation of wildlife by powerful right-wing
political factions, inspired judges at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film
Festival to create a special jury award “for a filmmaker with the courage to
pursue a difficult and controversial topic.” Her films and related
campaigns, in particular “Cull of the Wild: The Truth behind Trapping
(available on PETA TV), have made significant contributions in the legal
struggle to protect animals.

With “Lost Dogs”, her fifth independent film, Vanessa continues to give
voice to the animals she seeks to protect.

LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER:

Dear Friend,

Animals need a voice. Our society needs a voice different from the drone of corporate media. For this reason I founded 21st Paradigm in 1998, to counter mainstream media and to encourage respect for the intrinsic value of all life. Since our incorporation as a 501(c)(3) non-profit in February 2001, we have produced numerous award-winning documentaries, PSAs and short films, given presentations and fought legislation in the highest levels of Congress. Our films have inspired and supported the work of activists fighting for the rights of animals, the environment, of disenfranchised cultures, marine life and the oceans; they have garnered the support of politicians, swayed court cases, pushed individuals to change careers, shifted paradigms and saved animals.

In over two decades of producing issue-driven films, we have proven ourselves tenacious and committed to striving for justice no matter the cost. We are never short of ideas, causes or motivation. We are always short of funds. With more funding we could be making films faster and more effectively, covering urgent issues with more staff, greater outreach and distribution. Please help us meet our goals as filmmakers. Time spent fundraising is time not spent on making films. The animals need a voice. Compassionate society needs a voice. We are that voice.

For all sentient beings,

Vanessa Schulz
Founder and President
